Characteristics: Boss is a good boy who does not seem to know how big he is. Though we don’t know for sure what breed he is we have leaned into Rottweiler mix as he has a lot of Rottweiler traits with how he acts. He loves to get his nose to the ground and sniff everything when he is outside. He appears to be kennel trained as he rarely has an accident in his kennel here at the shelter. He has done well with being muzzled for medical and body handling situations, we think he may have had some previous muzzle training. Boss also knows a few basic commands, sit/down/shake. His favorite thing when hanging out with people is to sidle his tush up to you to get a good tooshie scratch!! It took Boss awhile to warm up to staff when he first came in as a stray and picked 1 person to start with to trust and we were able to build relationship from there. He is food motivated from training but he holds out for the “good stuff”, his favorite snack so far has been American cheese. Boss does well with being muzzled but does not like restraint. He does well with men, although he has only met a few here at the shelter but has been loose and comfortable during these meets. Most of the staff at the shelter is female so that is who he has had the most contact with. So far Boss has shown no reactivity with other dogs. We will be doing more in-depth testing within the next week. Boss is happy to see the people he knows but will growl at unknown people at times. He seems interested in wildlife but has not tried to chase. Notes from evaluator: Boss is a happy boy and wants attention and affection. He wants to jump and play but does not realize his size. He is building up his confidence and settling in to the surroundings. He loved me when I met him and likes high value treats like cheese. Due to his size, some of the staff have been hesitant to work with him because of his strength. He is gaining in his confidence and showing a good personality with staff. He would need to be with a home that has experience with large dogs, has a strong fence and a home without small children. Due to Boss’s size, he needs a person that knows how to firmly command and control Boss’s reactions to outside elements that make him fear growl or fear bark. Due to his good temperament, the humane society wants to seek an adopter and is willing to be patient. They are tight on room and limited resources.
