Characteristics: Wednesday complaints from Wayne: Why do the young dogs get all the glory? “Bah, humbug. Another glorious day without a single person asking to meet me. I heard Frank the St. Bernard had people piling in to meet him. But what about me? Sure, Frank can drool, but I can too. And I’m a big hunky dude just the same. The staff is saying I need to “put myself out there” more. So here goes: If anyone is looking for an adorable but sometimes grumpy, aged to perfection, stubborn Rottie to add their life, then I am the dog for you! I promise to fill your days with lots of sleeping, snoring and exercising my independent nature. I will (begrudgingly) listen to you if you need someone to vent to and will only talk back sometimes. I’m looking for a place to live out my days without the interruption of any pesky children, general nonsense or other animals that will disturb my peace. Have I sold you yet? I am housetrained, nondestructive, play with my own toys and lay on my own beds. I walk great on a leash if you don’t mind slow and steady and allowing me to bask in all the smells I please. Have I got you hooked? Let’s make this deal happen. I’m tired of waiting and watching all these young, eager-to-please dogs get adopted before me. I may be a stubborn old dude, but I deserve my chance too as I am loving and just want all the pets I can get!”
Notes from evaluator: Wayne was a complete love bug…he came into shelter as a stray. He sought out attention and just wanted pets, snuggles and belly rubs. He is in an office during the day with some of the staff and just lays around and plays with his toys. He is very low energy and a happy boy. They have been working with and managing his resource guarding He was not doing well in the general population area. The loud noises and many dogs stressed him out. Now he has his own space in a separate building and is doing great there with his many toys. He loves his toys and plays with them non stop. The handler said they have easily been managing his resource guarding by redirecting him with treats if they want to take something away from him. Wayne has not been around other dogs at the shelter, however his calm nonchalant personality would bring you to believe he would be fine with low energy dogs. Due to his resource guarding issues, they are concerned that if another dog tried to take one of his toys, their could be an issue. Wayne is very low energy and would do great in almost any environment as an only pet or with no small children.
