Characteristics: Captain appears to be a confident, happy well adjusted dog. He accepts contact from strangers, male and female. He does not bark at approaching strangers. He wags his tail and is always happy to see us. He does not react to any of the other dogs in our kennels. He actually plays with a group together in the play yard. I witnessed his previous owner and their children together, and he was submissive to a fault with the kids, rolls over on his back for belly rubs. He was gentle with their 4 year old child. His activity level is more like a puppy than an adult dog. He loves toys and fetching a ball. He gallops in the yard and kicks up his real paws in delight when outside. He does love to jump on our cuddle couch and be a lap dog for a few minutes every day. We have one dog that is nearby that is dog reactive, and he avoids that kennel when passing by and does not make eye contact. We are working on Captain’s tendancy to jump when excited. He is doing well. Captain came to us because the owner adopted the dog from our county kill shelter at one of our adoption sponsored events. The family was moving, and could not take Captain with them. They tried to surrender to the animal shelter they adopted him from, but they were from outside the county, so they surrendered to Kerrville Pets Alive, where he has been since January 29th, in our care.

Eval notes: Captain is a wonderful dog and takes treats gently. We do not know why Captain was not reclaimed at the county shelter the first time he came in.  All of us felt that certainly someone must be looking for him..  He was healthy, in good shape, and had a very good personality and was well socialized.  The family that adopted him loved him and hated to give him up.  We know that he would be a wonderful dog for a growing family or even a retired couple.  He just wants to be with people most of the time, in the middle of the action and not forgotten in some backyard. Captain wants a family so bad.  He loved the children that he lived with, and needs an active home with people around him most of the time.  He is confident, and gentle, playful and “goofy”.. He is very intelligent and could easily be taught many commands with an experienced owner
