Characteristics: Clyde showed up at Beauty View Resort, in Gravois Mills, MO (Ozarks) on August 10th. The “weekenders” who own homes there believe he was dumped. He was roaming around and sleeping under porches. The residents noticed he was thin, so they all started leaving food out for him. Clyde (the name they gave him) was scared of all people at first but, after a few weeks, he finally allowed them to touch and pet him. He quickly became the beloved pet of all the residents…good with adults and kids alike. He played well with all the resident dogs, including puppies (see video sent by email). Unfortunately, no one could adopt him. They were very worried about his future since lake season was coming to a close and everyone would be gone by winter. So, they reached out to several rescues. They were able to get him into a vehicle and bring him to the Kansas City area. Clyde’s first night (9/10/24) was spent at the home of a friend of our rescue. She has 2 kids and 3 dogs. She said he did great, settled in quickly and had no accidents in the house. He even “asked” to go outside at one point. The only issue is that he jumped her 4 foot chain link fence. He didn’t run off…was just sniffing in the grass. Night #2 (which was last night) was spent at our rescue facility in the country. He was not happy about being restricted to the 20’x40′ fenced yard (with access to his run in the barn). He kept trying to climb out of the 6′ metal fence. I doubt he could actually do it, but was scared to leave him for the night. So I dosed him with Trazadone. Once it kicked in, he voluntarily went into his run and laid down for the night. He was still calm this morning. This dog has a great temperament once he settles into a situation. He is a true gentle giant and would do amazingly well in a home with a 6′ privacy fence and a family who gives him hugs and cuddles, since he is very affectionate. He just needs people to be patient and take it slow at first until he decides the situation is safe. I feel confident that he will settle in very quickly in a new home as long as he has loving people who understand that he’s had a rough start to life…and can show him some grace. I think he’ll do okay at the rescue until a foster or adoptive family is secured, but I know the sooner he is in an actual home….the better
